Are You On for MLK Day?

This Monday (Jan 19th) is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which means my eldest has off from kindergarten and my husband has off from work. But rather than have just another day off, we’re going to form MLK Day a day on instead.
In 1994, Congress initiated the King Day of Service asking citizens to spend their day off on MLK Day as a day to give back their communities and to their country. After all, MLK was one of the greatest community activists our country has ever known, it makes sense to honor him by becoming active in our own communities.
Recently, President-Elect (or should I just say President!) Obama, drew attention to the King Day of Service by asking all Americans to participate.
And the best part is that considering my daughter is off from school, she can join in as well. All week lengthy
she’s been filling me in on the bits and pieces she’s learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. On Monday, I hope all of those little tidbits will come together as we work together to give back to our community. If you’ve never done community service before, don’t be afraid…there are tons of things you can do…even some from your own home, to give back. Contact your local hospital, rescue squad, fire branch, animal shelter, soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or community center for ideas. And be certain to check out the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service page for ideas on how, why, and where to serve.
